Summary of Lethal Weapon/Lethal Weapon 2/Lethal Weapon 3:

Reckless cop Riggs (Mel Gibson) and family man Murtaugh (Danny Glover) are partners whose work routine is never routine in the first three films of the series that reinvented buddy-cop action, all here in exclusive-to-DVD Director’s Cuts adding footage not seen in theatres. Lethal Weapon (Disc 1/Side A) pits our squabbling heroes against a death-dealing drug ring…and Riggs takes a plunge with a would-be suicide jumper. Fireworks - Fun Movie

A superstar and cultural icon in his native Japan, Takeshi “Beat” Kitano has conquered more than one medium, but he is best known in the West for his remarkable films. Among those, Fireworks is the clear favorite, a taut and enigmatic noir that fluctuates between perfect stillness and savage eruptions of violence.

Kitano plays a cop named Nishi, a determinedly impassive man whose face occasionally ripples with an involuntary tic, hinting at the explosive but contained forces within. Nishi’s wife (Kayato Kishimoto) is dying of leukemia, a disease that already killed their child, and he cares for her with a shattering tenderness. While on a stakeout, Nishi takes a break to check in on her, and while he’s gone his partner is crippled and another officer is killed. With death hovering at home and a score to settle outside, Kitano’s hero sets off on an isolated course to seek justice.

Few filmmakers have understood as well as Kitano has here the irresistible draw of a thriller told with a moody calmness, with an eye toward graceful construction and rigorous composition. The careful, unhurried dispensing of story information also helps keep the focus on Nishi’s warrior soul, on his mysterious capacity for the extremes of gentleness and brutality. The story here is the way one man can be the sum of such bold contradictions, and a great story it is. –Tom Keogh

“You’ll have a bit of fun with this one, Mr. Rumpole,” and so will fans of this venerable BBC series. This may not be Horace Rumpole’s absolute finest hour (65 minutes, to be exact), but it is his first. John Mortimer introduced his crusty, irrepressible British barrister in this long-lost 1975 television play, originally broadcast as part of the anthology series Play for Today. Leo McKern doesn’t portray so much as inhabit Rumpole, as cynical about the justice system (”Crime doesn’t pay, but it’s a living”) as he is passionate about defending his clients; in this case, a sullen black youth accused of stabbing a stranger at a bus stop. Though his wife (”she who must be obeyed”) needles him as “an old Bailey hack,” he rises to the occasion after determining that there is more to this “20-minute case” than simply “just another boy with a dagger.” It’s grand fun watching Rumpole get the best of scowling judges and corrupt policemen. Rumpole could very well have been reviewing this episode when he tells his son, Nick, “Sometimes, it goes well… sweet and easy as knocking back a pint of Guinness.” – Donald Liebenson

Bobby G. lives life on the edge in this real, raw New York street drama.

Bobby is a small-time coke dealer, always on the hustle but rarely successful. He lives in Hell’s Kitchen with his Puerto Rican girlfriend Lucy, who makes ends meet as a prostitute. A typical day finds bobby selling $20 bags to neighborhood locals and passing cars.

A yuppie kid looking to score a kilo of coke approaches him to broker a deal and Bobby sees the opportunity of a lifetime to make some real money. His rough days may just be over. With the tidy profit he could even leave the business. Playing out of his league, Bobby arranges to get the kilo from Astro, a fearsome, high-level drug dealer. Though Lucy announces that she’s decided to go back to Puerto Rico and pleads with him to make a fresh start too, Bobby is sticking to his deal and isn’t going anywhere now, convinced he’ll be ” livin’ large in a matter a’ days.”

On deal day the client gets nervous and the plan goes awry with Bobby turning over the merchandise without being able to hold on to the cash. He now fears for his life unless he can come up with the money, fast, to pay back Astro. Seized with panic Bobby seeks out an acquaintance, Dollar Bill, who puts him in touch with a mob figure who needs somebody “whacked” and is willing to pay big bucks for it too. Though Bobby has never fired a gun in his life, he carries out the execution. The act plunges him into a state of shock and torment verging on madness.

In the ensuing hours, Bobby, his mind in a daze, will find redemption in a bizarre journey involving a homeless woman, the Hudson River, and a blind street-peddler named Popeet. He will also learn, that what fate may give, she is just as free to take away.
